The London Borough of Havering is situated in east London and forms part of Outer London. The main town is Romford and other important settlements are Hornchurch and Upminster. The borough includes the following wards: Brooklands, Cranham, Elm Park, Emerson Park, Gooshays, Hacton, Harold Wood, Havering Park, Heaton, Hylands, Mawneys Ward, Pettits, Rainham and Wennington, Romford Town, Saint Andrews, South Hornchurch, Squirrels Heath, Upminster.

The Borough was created in 1965 by the combined former area of the Municipal Borough of Romford and Hornchuch Urban District. The name Havering was found in documents from around the 12th century. The origins of this name in the Middle ages was linked to the legend of Edward the Confessor and a mystical ring returned to him by Saint John the Apostole.

• Did you know that Separate Recycling Collections started across the Borough?
  A Recycling Collection Trial started operating in 25,000 households. Because of the successful results it is going to be extended to more areas across the Borough. By the end of 2009 the orange recycling sacks, along with corrugated (thick) cardboard will be collected separate from the rubbish sacks across the whole Borough.
