The Borough of Croydon is the southernmost London borough and is part of Outer London. It covers an area of 87 km2 (33.6 sq mi). This is the the largest London borough by population. The Borough of Croydon was formed in 1965 from the urban parts of Coulsdon and Purley and the County Borough of Croydon. There are two theories for the origin of the name. According to the first one, the Saxons who settled there in th 8th Century named the area Croydon from Crogdene and Croindone. From Anglo-Saxon croeas deanas means ?the valley of crocuses?. According to the second theory the name had its origin from the Old French croie dune, meaning ?chalk hill?, since Croydon stands at the northern edge on the chalk hills called the North Downs.
